Soulmate Vs Twin Flame Vs Karmic: What Is the Difference?
There are many types of relationships in the spiritual realm. Some are divine counterparts, while others are short-lived entanglements.
The most common types of relationships are soulmate, twin flame, and karmic.
What is the difference between soulmate, twin flame, and karmic?
As a general rule, the main difference is soulmate and twin flame come to your life to make you grow as a soul. They can give you extraordinary experiences, make you feel happier, fulfilled, and truly loved. On the other hand, karmic can result in great suffering and is often characterized by intense, toxic drama punctuated by brief happy moments.
Let’s dig deeper into the characteristics of these three types of relationships.
1: Soulmate Relationship
A soulmate can be one of the most fulfilling relationships with another human being.
A soulmate counterpart can give you a sense of stability, inner peace, and harmonious existence.
Many people believe that a soulmate is that one person with whom you have a strong bond.
The truth is, you can have more than one soulmate relationship in your lifetime.
How do you know you are in a soulmate relationship?
The main signs of a soulmate relationship are:
- An instant mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical connection. You just ‘get each other’ effortlessly
- You share a similar worldview, like the same things, and have common values. This is a big point of similarity between twin flame vs. soulmate connections
- The connection you feel with this person seems extraordinary and out of the physical plane, Like something you have never experienced before

What is a soulmate exactly?
Soulmates are people with whom we shared a soul connection in a past lifetime.
We can instantly connect with them, even when they are a stranger on the physical plane.
This instant connection is called soul recognition.
“Your souls recognize each other from a past life, and they are coming together to continue from where they left off.”
A soulmate will feel like home. You will feel safe and secure around them.
Sharing your fears and vulnerabilities with them feels natural and right.
Soulmates understand each other at a deeper level.
Often, they can almost read each other’s minds and soul and understand exactly what the other needs before they even utter a word.
Generally, soulmates have a harmonious relationship. They work well together and are keen not to harm or hurt the other person.
They will actively work to bring the best out of their partner. Some of the best or most successful marriages are where the two people are soulmates.
When you are in a soulmate relationship, you may not always experience sexual fireworks.
This is a major difference between twin flame and soulmate partnerships.
You may have a physical attraction and even enjoy a great sex life. But, the passion and energy may not be as intense and short-lived as a twin flame.
Soulmate partnerships are more stable and slow-burning.
They are the types of relationships we see with our grandparents or parents who have happily stayed together for multiple decades.
This doesn’t mean you will never fight or experience suffering from your soulmate. Let’s look at some soulmate challenges.
Soulmate challenges
Like any other relationship, soulmates have their own set of challenges.
But, soulmates will always strive to fight fair. Remember, the intention of each soul in the partnership is to heal and elevate each other on their evolutionary path.
Disagreements will never spiral into nasty, prolonged fights.
Rather, the soulmates will resolve their problems fast and move toward familiar stability. This is a huge difference between a karmic relationship vs. soulmate.

2: Twin Flame Relationship
What is a twin flame?
A twin flame is the other half of your soul. You decided to split into two (the divine feminine and the divine masculine), and this lifetime many twin flames are reuniting.
“It is believed that twin flames originated from the same soul after the soul chose to split into two physical bodies.”
If you are an old soul, you likely have a twin flame and will meet them at some point in your evolutionary journey. Check out this video to learn more about old souls.
What are the signs of a twin flame relationship?
- Like soulmates, twin flames have a profound soul connection. After all, they are made of the same stuff, the same soul
- One of the twin flame soulmate signs is that when you meet your twin flame, they will reflect you. They will embody all your fears, likes and dislikes, values, and preferences and mirror them back to you
- The relationship starts intensely. It can also end dramatically if the two of you do not know how to navigate the tower moment twin flame phase of great upheaval and change
- You will feel spiritually bonded. The sexual chemistry will also be explosive as if you have been longing for each other for a long time.
When each part of the soul chooses to manifest in the physical body, it sets out to meet its other half.
Both parts have the goal of coming together, forming a strong spiritual bond, and evolving together.
You will feel like you have known each other before. You will understand each other from a deeper level and can even finish each other’s sentences.
It is common for twin flames to have the same dreams and communicate telepathically.

Twin flame challenges
The intense connection between twin flames can sometimes work against them, especially when they first meet.
Having originated from the same soul, twin flames have similar psychological imbalances and emotional needs.
Each person in the twin flame partnership wants the other to meet their emotional needs.
When the partners lack self-awareness or self-mastery, the need to heal and meet their needs can quickly deteriorate into nasty fights.
Periods of silent treatment and in-fighting can be followed by intense love-making, reconciliation, and reconnection.
Because they originate from the same source, it is very easy for twin flames to develop a co-dependency.
This can create a toxic and unhealthy relationship and result in great suffering, a significant karmic twin flame sign to watch out for.

Some twin flame gurus claim that your partnership will end when Spirit decides the relationship has run its course.

- The partnership might not be physically abusive, but if you feel physically, emotionally, and financially drained, this is a major sign of a karmic bond.
- If you have more bad moments than good ones, this could be a karmic entanglement.
What exactly is a karmic relationship?
A karmic relationship or marriage is formed when you owe your partner a karmic debt, or they owe you from a previous lifetime. The partnership ends when the debt is settled.
Karma is the total sum of your actions in the present and past lifetimes. These actions affect your future lifetimes.
When you owe a twin flame karmic debt, it will manifest in all the lifetimes in which you incarnate until you settle the debt.

Hi Julia,
This is great! Thank you for writing it and sharing it!
I have a question. How do we know that we have a karmic debt, what it is, how to pay it, and how do we know when it is paid?
Thanks so much!
Jenny
Hi Jenny! We don’t know what it is and how it was paid until we look back after it has ended (and sometimes not even then). For example, if one of you were codependent on the other last lifetime it might be the other way around this lifetime.
