What is Spiritual Awakening?

If I were to describe what spiritual awakening is like for me, I would say it’s like being awakened to the reality that the world that we see is not the only dimension that exists.

I know. That’s like, kinda deep. I mean, I remember the first time I read “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle.

I realized that I was suffering because I was too attached in the material world. And there’s actually a divine being and you can be at bliss with nothing else but yourself.

I’m not gonna go into detail. I guess I want you to have your own experience for the first time without any spoilers.

That was the book that planted a seed for me. I mean, if you like books I highly suggest that.

But if you’re more of a movie person then you can start with the movies I’ll mention below.

It is the stage when one starts to look beyond the material world, making one comprehend life and his/her position in the universe.

This awakening results in a person finding some level of meaning and understanding of life, thus leading to a better and more productive existence.

It’s like you’re an onion and the deeper you go into your spirituality, the closer you get to the core of your being.

It’s like coming out of the shell that your environment has shaped for you and discovering the true essence of your being.

It’s like a whole new dimension has opened and the more you explore it, the more you’ll discover about yourself too.

Below is a compilation of ten films that are widely regarded as the best spiritual awakening movies.

Each of these Spiritual awakening movies presents its viewers with various angles for pondering and growing.

1. The Matrix (1999)

Directed by: The Wachowskis

”The Matrix” is a highly successful science fiction movie that will attract a viewing audience through the inclusion of digital special effects.

If you haven’t watched it, you’ll be surprised that it’s actually one of the best spiritual awakening movies.

They use impressive kinetics when presenting the concept of the search for the true nature of existence in a manipulated world.

When Neo is introduced to the truth, he learns that the world he was living in was just an illusion created by supercomputers relating to the Matrix.

This forces him to come to the search for truth and knowledge of what is real.

The film’s spiritual message centers on three major concepts:

  • The inevitability of choice and its consequences.

2. The Peaceful Warrior (2006)

Directed by: Victor Salva

Inspired by Dan Millman’s book ‘Way of the Peaceful Warrior’, this film is the tale of a young gymnast named Dan, who meets his spiritual mentor Socrates.

By these incidents, Dan is able to help his friends as they make him change his lifestyle from arrogance to a more spiritual, stress-free  one.

The movie underscores the realities of life and the things that one should not lose in life.

Success does not come with wealth and good looks, one should have faith in their intuition and learn to live in the moment.

“Samsara” also makes the list as one of the best spiritual awakening movies. It is a well-made and eye-opening documentary that focuses on reincarnation.

Shot over the period of five years in twenty-five countries, it gives a contemplative gaze through numerous cultures and terrains.

The director of this spiritual awakening movie is Terrence Malick and the movie is about life’s evaluation with the sophistication of the adults against their childhood.

The film is rich in themes of grace, spirituality, and despair.

It is one of the few films that has a nonlinear perception of time and space, and masterful visuals.

It is a deep reflection on the relativity of life and the universe.

5. Kundun (1997)

Directed by: Martin Scorsese

We can’t make a list of spiritual awakening movies and not include one with the story of the Dalai Lama.

This features the life of the current 14th Dalai Lama from his early childhood when he was living in Tibet as a refugee in India.

The movie offers a better understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and the spiritual transformation of the Dalai Lama as a result of political conflicts and seeking for harmony.

Stylistically, the director, Martin Scorsese, with the help of excellent music composed by Philip Glass, produces a quiet and profound film.

6. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. . . and Spring (2003)

Directed by: Kim Ki-duk

Korea actually makes good spiritual awakening movies too.

This is a sparkling Korean film that illustrates the life of Buddhist monk and the four seasons.

This follows the life of a monk right from childhood till his old age and all the transformations that the main character is bound to undergo in that period of his life.

The fact, that there is little to no speaking in the film and the grand idea is supported by the magnificent shots of nature suggests the circle of life and the search for one’s spirit.

7: The Secret (2006)

Directed by: Drew Heriot

I have a confession to make. The Secret is actually my favorite of all the spiritual awakening movies. I think it’s what got me started on this journey.

This movie is based on the documentary film “The Secret,” based on the book of the same name written by Rhonda Byrne.

It examines the possibility of its abilities working miracles in human life, such as changing the financial status and acquiring health.

Some of the authors of the film are authors, philosophers, producers, and artists who make us understand how what we think and imagine can create reality.

The show allows people to use their inner power and to have faith in themselves, which is one of the major benefits, so “The Secret opens people to the endless opportunities available and the power within them. ”

8. Baraka (1992)

Directed by: Ron Fricke

A baraka simply refers to a blessing. It is a non-narrative film that aims to portray the purity of the world in a way that depicts life on this planet.

Through the use of time-lapse and slow-motion photography, audiences are offered a visual and audio tour through different tongues, expressions of spirituality, and physically splendid territories.

The “Baraka” encourages the audience to think about unity and the birds, as well as the religious significance of the existent world.

9. Life of Pi (2012)

Directed by: Ang Lee

I love spiritual awakening movies that involve animals.

Hailed from the novel of Yann Martel, ‘Life of Pi’ outlines a fictitious story of a young Indian boy named Pi.

tiger staring at camera

He finds himself stranded in a lifeboat after a shipwreck and shares the lifeboat with the Royal Bengal tiger.

It symbolizes faith in oneself and the ability to survive in the most unlikely situations and circumstances.

By the end of the movie, the audience is provided with a platform to think about faith, the purpose of the storytelling, and the strength of the spirit in man that dares to exist in a sterile environment.

10. Cloud Atlas (2012)

Directed by: Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachovki, and Lilly Wachovki

Last but not least of our spiritual awakening movies compilation is Cloud Atlas.

It is noteworthy to mention that “Cloud Atlas” is an attempt at creating an epic narrative that includes several loosely connected stories spanning different epochs and geography.

Through this narrative concept, we, the audience, learn about issues such as reincarnation, karma, and the consequences that follow every action we take.

One may also note the idea of the unity of all created beings and the ageless search for passion, liberty, and equity.

To make the movie highly engaging and effectively convey its messages, the structure of the story was built in a certain way.

It would make the audience contemplate their actions’ various consequences and the soul’s eternality.

This is the last one for this list but I assure you, there are more spiritual awakening movies out there.
