Is Your Throat Chakra Blocked? Here’s How to Heal It

How to heal throat chakra blocks is not only about speaking louder or becoming more confident. It is about reconnecting with the truth of who you are, listening to your soul, and allowing your voice to carry what is genuinely asking to be expressed.

Heather Schmidt is an international recording artist, trained opera singer, and filmmaker whose work explores sound, frequency, nature, and spiritual healing. In this conversation, she shares her personal experience of throat chakra blockage, a simple practice for checking in with your inner guidance, and the powerful messages that came through while creating Voice of the Earth in the Azores.

Key Takeaways

  • A blocked throat chakra can reflect withheld truth, self-doubt, and learned patterns of silencing yourself.
  • Muscle testing, meditation, visualization, and affirmations can support inner guidance and vocal expression.
  • Nature, water, and acceptance can help create space for emotional release during times of change.
  • Healing asks us to lead with worthiness, courage, empathy, and the rising balance of feminine energy.

Finding the Connection Between Voice, Sound, and Soul

Your career began in music. How did it lead you toward spiritual work and healing?

I have been an international recording artist for about 25 years, and singing was always the one thing I knew I could do well. I grew up with pretty intense ADHD, and music gave me a place where I could focus completely.

I have performed internationally, particularly throughout Asia and China, and have also created music in Pakistan, where my husband is from. Over time, I began to understand something much deeper about singing: the voice is profoundly connected to the soul.

I had seen how music moved people throughout my career. A song can bring someone to tears immediately, help them process a difficult experience, or shift the energy in a room. Eventually, I wanted to understand that effect beyond performance, at the level of sound, vibration, and frequency. That journey ultimately led to the documentary Voice of the Earth.

Recognizing a Blocked Throat Chakra

What is the throat chakra, and what can make it become blocked?

The throat chakra sits in the throat area and is connected to voice, communication, self-expression, and the way you present yourself in the world. It is one of the body’s major energetic points.

Chakras can become partially or deeply blocked through life experiences, conditioning, difficult circumstances, and, for some people, experiences that feel connected to past lives. When the throat chakra is blocked, it can reflect a disconnect between what your soul knows and what you allow yourself to say.

For me, my throat chakra was partially blocked because I would not say what needed to be said. I am naturally a peacemaker. I do not want to disturb the harmony, and that meant I would sometimes withhold my truth.

There is also cultural conditioning around being outspoken, especially for women. Many of us internalize the belief that we should not be too loud, too direct, too emotional, or too much. As a loud ADHD child, I learned very early that taking up space was not always socially accepted, so I began to cut myself off.

That is a form of self-betrayal. When you continually silence your truth, you can end up betraying your soul, your gifts, and your higher purpose. Learning how to heal throat chakra energy begins with lovingly noticing where you have been withholding yourself.

Does a throat chakra blockage mean something is seriously wrong?

Not at all. Being completely free of every energetic block would be a bit like enlightenment. Even if your throat chakra feels 90 percent open, there may still be moments where fear, self-doubt, old habits, or a new situation bring up a small blockage.

It also changes from day to day. One day you may feel deeply expressed and clear. The next day, something may happen energetically or emotionally that makes speaking your truth feel harder. The point is not perfection. The point is conscious awareness.

If you are building a new creative project, expressing your purpose, or sharing your work publicly, it is very normal for old fears to arise. This can look like imposter syndrome, nervousness, second-guessing yourself, or wondering whether your voice is valuable enough to be heard.

Using Muscle Testing for Inner Guidance

How can someone check in with their throat chakra using muscle testing?

One practice I use comes from kinesiology, sometimes called muscle testing. It is a way of asking yes-or-no questions and allowing your subconscious or higher self to offer guidance that your conscious mind may not immediately access.

A practitioner can use arm testing, but you can also create a subtle version for yourself by linking your fingers together. First, make sure you are hydrated. Drinking a full glass of water beforehand is helpful, because dehydration can interfere with the practice.

Then begin by setting the intention to receive a clear answer. Keep your mind as quiet as you can. Your analytical mind does not need to control the outcome.

  1. Link your fingers in a way that creates a gentle connection.
  2. Ask a question you know is true, such as, “My name is Heather.”
  3. Notice how your fingers respond. For many people, the connection stays firm for a yes.
  4. Ask a clearly false question, such as, “My name is Sarah.”
  5. Notice whether the connection weakens or slips. That may become your no signal.

Once you have recognized your personal yes and no response, you can ask: “Is my throat chakra open?” Give yourself a moment. Let the intention settle. Then notice your body’s answer.

You can also ask whether the chakra is partially blocked or use percentages. For example, ask whether your throat chakra is 50 percent open, then 60 percent, 70 percent, and continue narrowing it down. It is simply a practice for self-inquiry, not a rigid measurement or a reason to judge yourself.

This type of intuitive check-in can also be useful in everyday situations. You might ask whether a decision feels aligned, whether a certain opportunity is right for you, or whether a particular way of sharing your work feels true. If overthinking has been drowning out your own knowing, this guide on how to stop overthinking and trust your intuition can support that process too.

Practical Ways to Open Your Voice

What are some simple practices for how to heal throat chakra energy?

The most powerful practice is intention. Once you have recognized that your throat chakra needs support, you can sit in meditation and consciously invite it to open.

Visualize the throat chakra becoming bright, vibrant, and alive. See it glowing more strongly. Ask it gently, “What do you want to tell me today?” Then listen without forcing an answer.

Sometimes a phrase, an insight, or a new mantra will arise naturally. You can repeat that phrase and allow yourself to feel it in the body. One example is:

“I am a strong, powerful woman with a strong, powerful voice.”

The words matter, but the feeling behind them matters even more. As you repeat an affirmation that genuinely resonates, you may begin to feel your voice opening from the inside out.

Learning how to heal throat chakra blocks also means becoming willing to say what is true with honesty and care. It does not mean using your voice to create unnecessary conflict. It means no longer abandoning yourself just to preserve an outer appearance of harmony.

Recording Voice of the Earth in the Azores

What inspired you to create Voice of the Earth?

I met my close friend Sarah, an incredible filmmaker, at a meditation retreat in Bali. At the same time, I was studying with John Stuart Reid, an acoustic engineer and researcher who explores the science of vibration.

Through performing, I had already witnessed how a powerful voice could transform emotion and energy. Through this research, I began looking at sound on a physical level too. We are energy, and we move through life vibrating at different levels. Sound and frequency can affect us in ways that are both felt emotionally and experienced physically.

Sarah and I went to the Azores intending to meet local musicians and create a song with the Earth of the Azores. It is an extraordinarily spiritual place, full of powerful natural presence. I felt called there before I fully understood why.

But when I arrived, the Earth began communicating with me in a much more direct way. Making the song was still part of the journey, but it quickly became secondary to a deeper conversation about vibration, healing, release, and change.

What did you experience there?

As soon as I walked onto the mountaintop where we planned to film, I began crying and shaking. There was no logical reason for it. I simply knew energetically that something was releasing.

Those are the moments when you have to let yourself go with the experience. Sometimes your body knows that old energy is ready to leave before your mind can make sense of it. The release may feel uncomfortable, but it can also be for the greater good.

The process became part of the film. It was not about creating a polished storyline where everything looked composed. It was about allowing the Earth’s message to come through: we are living through tremendous change, and we have to be courageous enough to release what no longer belongs in the higher frequency we are moving toward.

Water, Vibration, and Nature as Healing Allies

How do water and nature support this process of healing?

One of the beautiful areas of sound research explores what happens when vibration interacts with water and living cells. Human bodies contain a great deal of water, and being near a river, the ocean, rainfall, or flowing water can feel deeply regulating.

The sound of trickling water contains a range of frequencies, including frequencies we may not consciously hear. Yet the body still interacts with that vibration. Research into cymatics and sound vibration offers striking visual examples of how frequency can organize material into geometric patterns. You can explore the broader field through the overview of cymatics.

For me, that helps explain why being in nature can bring emotional release. When you stand in a river, walk beside the ocean, or sit with rain falling around you, you may feel your internal world reorganizing. Things that no longer serve you can begin to move.

The message I received was very clear: “Come to me, I will heal you.”

Go to the rain. Go to the ocean. Put your feet on the earth. Sit with the trees. Let yourself be with the soil, the mycelium, the water, and the living intelligence of the natural world. Nature is ready to help us release.

This is an important part of how to heal throat chakra energy too. Your voice is not separate from your body, and your body is not separate from the Earth. When you feel disconnected, rushed, or shut down, returning to nature can create the spaciousness needed for your truth to rise again.

Gaia’s Message for Tumultuous Times

What was the central message that came through from the Earth?

The message was that we are in a time of tremendous change. It may feel tumultuous because we are shaking loose years of pain, old experiences, inherited patterns, and energies that cannot come with us into a higher frequency.

Our relationships may change. Friendships may change. Jobs may change. The life path we thought was inevitable may no longer fit. If you are choosing a healing path, or what some call a higher timeline, this movement can be part of the process.

The invitation is acceptance. The more we can accept what is, rather than grip tightly to what has already ended, the easier the release can become. Acceptance does not mean passivity. It means recognizing that life is moving and choosing to meet that movement with courage.

Learning how to heal throat chakra blocks asks for that same courage. You may need to let go of an identity that kept you quiet. You may need to release relationships where honesty was not welcome. You may need to speak a truth that changes the direction of your life.

The Rise of Feminine Energy

What does the rise of feminine energy mean in this healing process?

Another major message was that it is time for the feminine to rise. Every person carries both feminine and masculine energy, regardless of gender. For a long time, much of society has rewarded a distorted form of masculine energy: pushing, forcing, hustling, dominating, and treating sensitivity as weakness.

That way of being is no longer serving us. The feminine brings gentleness, nurture, empathy, unity, co-creation, and the ability to lead through connection rather than force.

This does not mean ambition is wrong or that strength is not needed. It means we need balance. It means that success no longer has to require abandoning your softness, intuition, or emotional truth. If you are exploring what this balance can look like in your work, read more about building a feminine energy business.

The feminine rising also means no longer accepting second best in relationships or silencing yourself to fit into old cultural expectations. It means leading with honesty, clarity, and strength.

That is the deeper path of how to heal throat chakra wounds: using your voice with compassion, but using it fully.

Remembering Your Worthiness

If there is one message people need to hear right now, what is it?

You are worthy.

Take time to speak with your soul. Use your inner guidance. Ask questions. Listen quietly. Your soul has answers, and your guides are ready to connect with you more deeply and more clearly.

The era of thinking less of yourself is complete. The power, gifts, and incredible creations within you are ready to open. Be courageous enough to receive that truth.

As you practice energy, remember that your voice does not need to be perfect to be powerful. It simply needs to be yours. Speak from your soul, let nature support you, and allow yourself to believe that your truth has a place in this world.
